Alternatives

Alternatives to Open Factory, and whether Pro is worth it

What else a buyer of switchgear, transformers, gensets, chillers and machine tools can pay for, priced from each vendor's own page, and what Open Factory does not do.

In short. Open Factory publishes dated lead-time, price, tariff and interconnection data on factory and datacenter equipment: Free is $0, Pro is $40 a month or $400 a year, Desk is $1,500 a year per seat. Buy IBISWorld for a category memo, RSMeans for installed cost, Wood Mackenzie for a utility-scale forecast, Descartes for customs classification, Surplus Record for a used machine.

The alternatives

One row per product. Prices are copied from the vendor's own page on the date shown and linked; where a vendor prints no price, the row says so rather than guessing. Cadence is what the page states. The last column is the limit that matters to a buyer with a quote in hand.

What Open Factory does not do

No OEM relationships. We do not take money from equipment makers and we do not invest in companies we rate, so there is no OEM data feed behind the numbers; lead times come from the published OEM guides, filings and the Census M3 release, and prices from public bid tabs and award documents.

No custom studies below Institutional. Pro and Desk are a subscription to what we publish. Custom cuts, custom markets in the Large-Load Cost Table, analyst calls and the API with history are Institutional, $1,500 a month or $15,000 a year per firm.

The free layer is one published figure per class. Free gets the current month's lead time per class with OEM and date, the published Bid-Tab bands (n, median, p25, p75, region, window), the headline index numbers, the Large-Load Cost Table as it stands and the article text to the paywall. It does not get the edition history or the rows.

The paid rows are the history and the award rows. Pro carries every class monthly and bands by region; Desk carries the full Bid-Tab table and alerts; Institutional carries every Monitor edition since launch, the 2,712 award rows and 2,567 vendor bids with document URLs, and the API that serves them.

No installed-cost book, no used-equipment listings, no classification for 190 countries, no 20-city construction index. The table above names who sells each of those. No trial: the free part of every article is the trial. Nothing here is investment, legal, tax or customs advice.

Is Pro worth it

Is Pro worth $400 a year?

Pro is $40 a month or $400 a year. That is less than one IBISWorld Industry Research Report ($2,850), about the same as RSMeans Core ($396 a year) and less than SpendEdge Pro ($49 a month payable annually, $588 a year). For the money you get every article in full with the archive, the Lead-Time Monitor for every class monthly, Bid-Tab Price Book bands by region, Large-Load Cost Table history, calculators with saved inputs and exports, and the RFQ template library. It is worth it if you check equipment quotes or lead times more than once a year. It is not worth it if you only want one headline number per class; that is free.

Who should stay on Free?

Anyone who needs one published lead time per class, the headline index numbers, the Large-Load Cost Table as it stands, every article to the paywall and the calculators with default inputs. Free costs $0 and the free JSON API and MCP server carry the same figures. Pair it with the free tools in the table: the Flexport Tariff Simulator for ten HTS lookups and the Terrapin post for a rough lead-time range.

When is Desk the right buy instead of Pro?

Desk is $1,500 a year per seat, 25 percent off for four or more. It adds Lead-Time Monitor alerts by class, the full Bid-Tab Price Book table, Large-Load Cost Table history and alerts and a quarterly briefing call. It is for a sourcing team that wants to be told when a class moves, not to look it up. For comparison, SpendEdge Business is $399 a month payable annually ($4,788 a year) and RSMeans Complete Plus starts at $5,973 a year, each for one product line. A single reader who reads monthly is better served by Pro.

When should I buy something else instead?

Buy IBISWorld ($2,850 a report) when you need a category memo with market structure and supplier shares for an internal review. Buy RSMeans (from $396 a year) or Compass ($395 to $1,495 a database) when you need installed cost per line item or per square foot. Talk to Wood Mackenzie (quote only) when a regulator or board needs a utility-scale transformer forecast. Buy Descartes CustomsInfo (quote only) when a compliance desk classifies across 190 countries. Use Surplus Record or MachineTools.com when the job is a used machine that ships this month. Open Factory does none of these; it publishes dated prices, lead times, duty by HTS line and interconnection terms for the equipment a factory or datacenter buys.

Is there a trial, and can I cancel?

No trial. The free part of every article is the trial. Pro is $40 for one month, so the cheapest test is one month and then cancel; cancellation is any time from the manage page. Most of the alternatives in the table sell by the year or by the report: SpendEdge and RSMeans are payable annually, IBISWorld and Gardner are per report, and Wood Mackenzie and Descartes do not print a price.

Tiers side by side are on the subscribe page; the free and paid split by product is on the developers page.
